Claris

The Community Health Centre at Claris is open from 09.00 – 5:00pm on weekdays. For after-hours health care (overnight, weekends and public holidays) there is a Clinician (NP or GP) and a Registered Nurse available and on call 24/7.

During the busiest summer months (Jan-Feb) there may also be a Registered Nurse based at the clinic on weekends to provide emergency treatment, in addition to the on-call NP/GP and RN.

The clinic at Claris was built as a state house and was sourced by the Great Barrier Island Community Health Trust from Carrington Hospital back in the late 1980s.

It was transported to this site via barge from Auckland.

A local architect, Leanne Forsyth-King, did the redesigning and then local trades people did all of the work, transforming the old state house into a functional and well appointed Health and Community Centre that was officially opened in 1990.

There have been 2 subsequent refurbishments and extensions since then, one in 2010 and again in 2012.

In 2023 the Great Barrier Island Community Health Trust began a project to extend the Health Centre with a wing funded by a large donation from the Rural Women NZ Awana Branch. The wing will be called the Marion Barleyman Cottage Rural Womens NZ Awana Wing.
